How to balance lectures, assignments, revision, and a social life without burning out. A practical system used by top-performing students worldwide.

The Time Management Illusion

Most students don't have a time management problem — they have an energy management and prioritisation problem. There are only 168 hours in a week. After 8 hours of sleep per night (56 hours), 20 hours of lectures, and 20 hours for meals, hygiene and exercise, you have approximately 72 hours remaining. The question is never "do I have enough time?" — it's "am I using the time I have on the right things?"

The System: Three Core Principles

1. Time Blocking (Not To-Do Lists)

To-do lists create an illusion of productivity without specifying when things will actually get done. Time blocking assigns every task a specific slot in your calendar. Block study time the same way you'd block a lecture — it's non-negotiable.

2. The 2-Day Rule

Never let a task go more than 2 days without touching it. A 20-minute daily review of all active assignments prevents the avalanche of leaving everything to the last moment.

3. Strategic Procrastination

Use low-energy time periods (post-lunch, late evenings) for low-cognitive tasks: reading, email, admin. Save your peak cognitive hours (typically 9am–12pm) for your most demanding intellectual work.

Tools That Actually Help

  • Google Calendar with colour-coded blocks for each subject
  • Notion or Obsidian for linked note-taking
  • Forest App for distraction-free focus sessions
  • Weekly review every Sunday: plan the coming week in detail
