The TEAS Math section covers 4 key areas. This guide breaks down every topic, the exact number of questions, difficulty level, and best strategies for each.

Understanding the TEAS 7 Math Section

The ATI TEAS 7 Mathematics section consists of 38 questions (34 scored + 4 unscored pretest) and must be completed in 57 minutes. The four content areas are Numbers & Algebra (18 scored items), Measurement & Data (16 scored items), and two cross-cutting areas.

Content Area Breakdown

Numbers & Algebra (52.9% of scored items)

This is the highest-weighted area and covers: order of operations (PEMDAS), fractions, decimals, and percentages; ratio and proportion; solving linear equations; polynomials; and word problems. If you have limited study time, start here.

Measurement & Data (47.1% of scored items)

Covers: unit conversions (metric and imperial), geometric measurement (perimeter, area, volume), interpreting tables and charts, statistical measures (mean, median, mode, range), and data interpretation.

Calculator Policy

You are permitted an on-screen four-function calculator for the entire Math section. Use it strategically — for complex calculations, not mental arithmetic on simple problems.

Top Strategy Tips

  • Eliminate obvious wrong answers first to improve guessing odds
  • Write out your work — don't try to do multi-step problems mentally
  • For word problems, underline the question before reading the passage
  • Budget 1.5 minutes per question and flag difficult ones for review
  • Know your metric conversions cold: nursing requires them daily
